Faith and Fun

It’s great to be a kid at Our Saviour’s. We offer children of all ages a caring, nurturing environment in which to learn, have fun, and grow in their faith.

Sunday School

Sunday School is open to children in preschool (ages three and older) through sixth grade. Classes are held September to May, beginning the Sunday after Labor Day and ending the Sunday prior to the Memorial Day weekend.

Each week, the children meet at 9:00 am to hear a message, sing songs and pray. A free-will offering is collected at this time, as children learn about giving to such mission projects as God's Global Barnyard and Souper Bowl of Caring. They then go into age-appropriate classes until 9:45am, to learn and grow in their faith through lessons built around Bible stories, songs, crafts and interactive media.

First Communion

Our Saviour’s, like many ELCA congregations, has offered First Communion instruction to third-graders since 1997. (Earlier generations typically only received Holy Communion after being confirmed.)

The students prepare for their First Communion with five weeks of instruction beginning in the early part of the year. (First Communion is usually celebrated during the season of Lent.) There are three classroom sessions, a practice session, and a family Seder.

The students receive their First Communion on a Sunday mutually agreed upon by their families. Following the service, the students are presented with gifts and a reception is held for them in Schilke Hall.

VBS

Our popular Vacation Bible School (VBS) program attracts not only kids from Our Saviour's, but children from the surrounding area as well. Younger children generally participate in the program, while older kids serve as assistants.

Using a curriculum from Group Publishing, our next VBS program, "Rocky Railway. Jesus' Power Pulls Us Through," will be held August 10-14, 2020, with daily sessions from 9:00 am to noon. Families are invited to attend a special concert on the final day to hear the children sing the songs they learned during the week.

Christmas Pageant

Students each year put on a Christmas Pageant during our 5:00 pm worship service on Christmas Eve.

There’s a part for everyone in the Pageant. Toddlers get dressed up as little stars, and older children (and sometimes adults) play the parts of Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and angels, and the Three Wise Men.

The children also read passages from the Bible that tell the Christmas story. Christmas hymns, including a candle-lit rendition of “Silent Night,” are part of this annual tradition.

Other Activities

From our annual Easter egg hunt to wreath-making at our Advent Workshop, there are plenty of great activities for kids and their families to enjoy at Our Saviour’s. Check our calendar regularly for the latest family-fun events.

Hill Farm Preschool

Our Saviour’s is home to Hill Farm Preschool, which offers year-round programs for children ages two to five. The school is privately owned, and not directly affiliated with the church.
